Are design challenges worth participating in?

Are design challenges worth participating in? YES and YES!

I’ve been feeling unmotivated to create new things lately, so I decided to flip through my sketchbook. Back in December, I participated in a monthly design challenge called frosty and festive. It reminded me how helpful those can be, not only to expand your portfolio but to commit to your creative practice, and expand your imagination.

I always try to remember this phrase from Zig Ziglar: People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily. Is very true, so are these type of challenges, the recomendation should be daily but you can do this at least once a week, cause let’s face it, life happens and if feels like we are constantly busy with work and chores, among other things.

I am sharing s quick video of my sketchbook and how I selected one piece and print it, and that tangible product really made a huge change in me, like a tiny little sparkle is coming back to remind me of my creative practice. If relate to what I am talking about, I will suggest find a way to come back to that practice, whether is cooking, drawing, exercising, printing, reading ... whatever that might be, go back to the beginning of it. They’re a great way to fuel your creativity, and keep your practice alive.

If you’re feeling creatively stuck, I recommend giving a challenge a try. It might just be the spark you need. You can follow any of the ladies below on Instagram, they are really good at putting these monthly challenges.

Frosty and Festive Challenge video

Joselynn Martinez

Hi there, I am Josie Martinez. I am a hand-letter and doodle maker located in Las Vegas, NV. I am a trained graphic designer that over the years have been in love with Lettering. I use hand lettering with a mixture of doodles; I am fascinated with the analog style, (the good old fashion pen and paper) and then bringing them alive with digital techniques. In a few words, I describe my work as bold with a playfulness style. I constantly find myself personalizing greeting cards, custom products from T-shirts, mugs, tote bag, notebooks, all those products that we love to buy for ourselves or gift them to someone awesome. I am bilingual, Spanish speaker, which is my native language and I will love to work in the future with brands that are represent in Latin countries.
